Functional Neurology

Functional Neurology

Functional Neurology is a measurement-driven approach to understanding how the nervous system is functioning in real time. Rather than focusing only on structure, it evaluates how your brain and body are communicating — and uses that information to guide targeted rehabilitation.

At Brain & Spine Wellness Center, Functional Neurology is the clinical framework behind our programs. Brain rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation, concussion care, and other services are built from these objective findings.

How We Evaluate Nervous System Function

We begin with an objective neurological and functional assessment to identify which systems are under-performing and how that is showing up in your symptoms. Depending on your needs, testing may include evaluation of:

  • Vestibular and balance function (how your inner ear and brain coordinate stability)

  • Eye tracking and visual-motor control (how your brain stabilizes vision with movement)

  • Sensory integration and proprioception (how your brain maps body position and movement)

  • Coordination, timing, and reaction-time performance

  • Autonomic or regulation patterns when symptoms suggest stress-response or “overload” involvement

This gives us a clear functional map of where communication is breaking down — so your program targets the right system from the start.

How Functional Neurology Guides Your Program

Once we know which networks are contributing to your symptoms, we design a personalized rehabilitation plan to retrain those specific pathways. The goal is to improve how your brain processes movement, balance, vision, and sensory input using targeted exercises that support neuroplasticity.

Progress is followed through repeat testing, so we can confirm change, refine your plan, and keep rehabilitation precise and individualized — not one-size-fits-all.

Applications of Functional Neurology in Our Clinic

Functional Neurology is the foundation for several specialized programs and tools we use to evaluate and retrain nervous system function, including:

  • Brain Rehabilitation — targeted neuro-rehab to strengthen sensory, visual, balance, and movement networks.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation — for dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and visual motion sensitivity, guided by objective neuro-vestibular findings.

  • AxisAI Rotary Chair Assessment & In-Chair Rehabilitation — advanced vestibular measurement and precision-guided rehabilitation delivered directly in the chair.

  • Neuro-Musculoskeletal Care — addressing pain and movement limitations by improving how the brain integrates posture, proprioception, stability, and motor control.

  • Neuromodulation — tools such as Stimpod NMS460 and gammaCore may be used when appropriate to support nervous system regulation, reduce symptom drivers, and enhance rehabilitation response.

  • Performance & Cognitive-Motor Training — systems like Dynavision and Neuro Sensorimotor Integrator (NSI) help train reaction time, visual-motor integration, attention, and dual-task performance based on your objective testing profile.
